Early life and family

Caleb James Goddard was born on 26 September 1970. His mother was actress Susan Anspach, who appeared in Five Easy Pieces alongside Jack Nicholson. While Anspach was pregnant, she married actor Mark Goddard, who became Caleb’s legal father. Mark Goddard was the actor known for Lost in Space. Anspach protected Caleb’s childhood from publicity, and Susan Anspach died in 2018.

The paternity question

The central question about Caleb’s parentage should be stated carefully. Anspach said that Jack Nicholson was Caleb’s biological father. Nicholson publicly denied paternity in 1984. A private acknowledgement was reported in 1996, correcting the earlier version of this article, which gave the year as 1995. In 1998, Nicholson was reported to have said that he and Caleb “got along beautifully now.” That cagey comment is not a clean public acknowledgement of paternity, and it is not a legal acknowledgement of paternity. The last sourced position used here is from the late 1990s; no present-day relationship claim is made.

Education and career: from journalism to diplomacy

Goddard graduated from Georgetown University in 1992. After brief early film work, he moved into broadcast journalism. He was reported to have helped launch the CNN Hong Kong bureau, to have served as Head of Programming for Bloomberg TV Asia, and to have worked in early live news at Yahoo. In 2012, he joined the US State Department as a Foreign Service Officer. Postings in Guinea, Thailand, Pakistan, Belgium and Mauritius have been reported; posting-by-posting detail has not been primary-confirmed here, so it is presented as reported rather than as confirmed fact.

Personal life and privacy

Goddard is married, and he has two children. In line with the care taken throughout this article, his wife’s name is not asserted here in a settled spelling, and his children’s names and genders are not asserted. He has kept his family life private, and he has not built a public career from his parents’ fame.
