What happened on 13 August 2018

On Monday, 13 August 2018, Dylan Hustosky made a 911 call shortly after 4 p.m., saying his wife had shot him through the door. As reported from the call, he said: “She’s going to kill me. She already shot me through the door.” Police arrived about 4:15 p.m. Dylan was found near Heritage Middle School, across the street from the home.

Dylan was treated at TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township, then transferred to MetroHealth Medical Center for surgery, and was reported in stable condition. The 911 audio later circulated online.

Kayleigh would not communicate with police at the scene. Lake County SWAT used a robot and drones, and Kayleigh was found upstairs in the home at about 7:42 p.m. with a single self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office handled the autopsy, and preliminary findings were consistent with suicide.

The couple’s 3-year-old son was with a relative in Stow during the incident, not in the house. The family dog was at the home and was unharmed.

What police did and did not say

Police said no prior domestic-violence calls to the home had been recorded. They said Dylan’s service weapon was not used, and they did not disclose the type of firearm used. No motive was publicly released.

Dylan Hustosky, 27 at the time, was a Gates Mills Police Department patrol officer since 2014, according to Gates Mills Chief Gregg Minichello.

Kayleigh Hustosky’s death left her family and the Painesville community grieving. Police reporting gave no publicly released explanation for the shooting, and this account does not add one.
